The Electricity Department was established in Minicoy on 15th September 1962 with capacity of 51.6 Kilowatts diesel generating set. In the beginning only day time supply (12 hours) with 43 numbers of domestic connections along with 50 numbers of streetlights throughout the Island were provided. Later on, in the 3rd Five Year Plan one 59KW Diesel generating set was installed.
The 24x7 power supply was declared by Late Mr. Morarji Desai, the then Prime Minister of India on 2nd February 1979.
Aim and Objectives:
To provide uninterrupted power supply to the consumers round the clock.
Generation of power with diesel generator and SPV Power plant and its maintenance.
Transmission and distribution of power supply to the consumers.
Provide service connection to new consumers.
Rectification of consumer complaints in time.
Internal wiring and its maintenance of government buildings.
Achievements:
New 808 KW Perkins Diesel generating set installed and commissioned on 03/12/2019.
Reconditioned 1000 KW MTU engine installed and commissioned on 15/09/2020.
144 Nos. Street lights provided in the newly constructed eastern beach road by extending LT distribution line by 2.16 KM.
Installation of HSD Oil pipeline from IOC Bulk storage tank to the storage tank of power house is completed.
Internal wiring of Passenger, hall, Jubilee hall, Multipurpose evacuation centre, Ayush hospital, pay ward, newly constructed ICU and Operation theatre of Government hospital, GSS kitchen, Strong room at civil station and police station are carried out.
Provided power supply to the newly installed ice plant and cold room in fisheries department Minicoy.
Extended HT distribution line by underground cable 1.340 KM.
