On 1st February 2019 Dept. of Environment & Forests, Minicoy Unit got established at new independent private building at south pandaram within the radius of 1.7 KM of the Deputy Collector Office Minicoy.

Department function with 13 technical staffs and 34 Safai Karmachari in which 1 staff is permanent and remaining 46 staffs on contractual. Department roles include co-ordination and overseeing the implementation of India’s environmental and forestry policies, schemes, programmes, information on projects and rules and regulation related to pollution, environmental protection, and wildlife etc to improve the quality of the environment in the island. As well as coordinating with local government, statutory bodies and research agencies on matters and facilities relating to the protection of the environment and the conservation of natural resource of the island

Aim and Objectives:

  • Department of Environment & Forest unit Minicoy was established in the Year 2017 .
  • Protect Marine Wildlife and also to protect the fragile Environment of Lakshadweep.
  • Conducts seminars, campaign, exhibitions & competitions to schools, general public, NGO’s SHG etc for boosting up scientific temper, environment awareness and attitude among the people.
  • The Department enforces laws against marine Wildlife offenders.
  • Social Forestry Scheme.
  • Coral Reef Monitoring Programme.
  • Collection, Segregation and Transportation of NBD resource materials to mainland.
  • Protection and Surveillance in the Minicoy Forest Range.
  • Lagoon and beach cleaning.
  • Awareness to local public regarding Environmental issues.
  • Sanitation and cleaning works on roadside.

Achievements:

  • Transported around 54.5 Tones of NBD resource materials to mainland.
  • Filled the vacant posts of Safai Workers.
  • Recruited Marine Wildlife Protection Force Watchers.
  • Implementing all the Schemes as per the direction of Head Office.
  • Conducted Swatch Lakshadweep Utsav-2020.
