Integrated Child Development Society (ICDS) started in Minicoy in the year 1975. An LVEO was appointed under Social Welfare Department. LVEO (Lady Village Extension Officer) functioned under the Headmaster, Govt. Senior Secondary School, Minicoy. Anganwadi Centres were opened under Social Welfare Department.

LVEO was designated as the Ex-Officio Secretary of Mahila Samajam. Some activities connected with welfare of women were organized in the Mahila Samajam. A tailoring class was started under the supervision of LVEO. Wearing of various types of baskets, hand embroidery etc. were also organized.

Afterwards Public Library cum Reading room was established in Minicoy. Henceforth LVEO was brought under the Librarian. Anganwadi/Balawadi Centres were also brought under Librarian. Later on a Crèche was also opened.

Aim and Objectives:

  • To ensure promotion of social, legal and economic empowerment of Women.
  • Ensuring development, care and protection of children.
  • Monitoring nutritional health status of Adolescent girls.
  • Implementing centrally sponsored schemes like Integrated Child Development, SABALA, Poshan Abhiyan, Mahila Shakthi Kendra Scheme, Prandhan Mantri Natru Vandana Yogana.

Achievements:

  • 14 Anganwadi Centres are functioning under the supervisoin of this Unit.
  • Items under the SNP (Special Nutrition Programme) are supplied to Nursing Mothers, pregnant ladies at their door step.
  • SNP is supplied to children in the age group 6 Months 3Years.
  • In addition to Pre-school education, Midday meals are provided to all the kids attending Anganwadi Centres.
  • LPG Connection and Gas Stove issued to 14 anganwadi centres.
  • Poshan Kit distributed to 3 poor families from all the eleven wards under the chairmanship of Chairperson VDP, Minicoy. Kit consisting of Rice, Dhal, Green Gram, Bengal gram, tea powder, Sugar, peanut, total 33 poor families were benefited under the scheme of Poshan Abhiyan.
  • Nutrition Kit consisting of dry Fruites such as dates, cashew nut, distributed to all children gregisterd under anganwadi centres.
  • Smart phone provided to all anganwadi workers for implementation of ICDS-CAS application under Poshan Abhiyan.
  • Training classes for tailoring/stiching is conducted in the unit for women in batches for 3 months.
  • Encouraging women to engage in income generating activities. Self Help Groups are working under the super vision of this unit. Presently there are 22 SHG’s in Minicoy.
  • Working Capital of Rs.15000 has been sanctioned By Director Women & Child Development for 5 SHG in Minicoy.
  • Stitching of Cloth bags are under process for distribution among beneficiaries registered under anganwadi centres.
  • Kitchen Gardens/Roof Top gardens implemented in 15 households under 14 anganwadi centres. Total 210 households benefited under the scheme of Poshan Abhiyan.

Activities:

  • Women & Child Development programs are implemented through this unit.
  • As part of pre-School education, 14 Anganwadi Centres and. Consequently 14 Anganwadi workers, 14 Anganwadi Helpers,
  • Midday meal is provided to the children in the age group 3-6years attending the pre-school classes in the Anganwadi Centres.
  • In addition to Midday meals, Nutritious food items under SNP are provided to all children attending Anganwadi Centres and Crèche.
  • Similarly, Nutritious food items are supplied to pregnant women and Nursing Mothers through the Anganwadi Centres.
  • Awareness programs like Seminars, Meetings, and discussions are organized with the financial assistance of the Directorate of Women & Child Development to create awareness regarding mother & child care.
  • Individual contacts through house visits are also organized.
  • Meetings of mothers & Adolescent girls are held with the active involvement of Anganwadi workers & Health workers.
  • For encouraging women to take up income generating activities, Self Help Groups were organized under the supervision of this Unit. Presently there are 22 active SHGs in Minicoy. Opportunities for informal education are created through various awareness programs.
  • PMMVY scheme for pregnant ladies and lactating mothers for providing financial assistance are functioning under our unit.
  • SABALA a scheme for Adolescent girls under 11-14 years who are out of school is provided food grain.
  • In every year September month we use to celebrate POSHAN MAAH which comes under the scheme Poshan Abhiyan.
  • Under Poshan Abhiyaan two other programmes also conducting ie : Community Based Event and Village Health Sanitation and Nutrition Day. In every month two events are conducting.
  • Girl child day, Women day, Non-violence day, children day,Breast feeding week, Nutrition day,Yoga day etc are also celebrated under our unit.
